Give Kindness a Chance

Throughout 2017 especially the latter part, we’ve experienced much grief, loss and hatred as a country.  Hurricanes, earthquakes, shootings and even mean bully-like comments made by our political leaders seem to overshadow the good that does happen each day.  Where has all the love gone?

Love comes from compassion.  We must cultivate compassion within our own self before we can love and empathize with others.  Notice the dialog you have with yourself daily.  Try to change the tone and sharpness of your thoughts toward yourself.  Be more forgiving and dare I say, more compassionate to your mistakes.

Compassion is defined as a feeling of deep sympathy accompanied by a strong desire to help.  Social media has its pros, but I, personally, feel it also isolates us.  We’ve lost our local communities.  We don’t chat with friends for hours; instead, we text to each other for minutes.

Once we developed a softer, kinder tone toward our self, we can then direct that same loving kindness to creating a stronger, more caring community.  Here are a few ways you can sprinkle a little pixie dust of happiness.

  1. Smile more.  We move so fast during the day, and rarely have good quality interactions from strangers.  Look up from your phone, and smile at the person that passes by.
  2. Learn names.  I’m an avid tea drinker and love treating myself at Starbucks.  Take the time to introduce yourself and learn the barista’s name.  A simple “Hello, Jennifer” can make all the difference in someone’s day.
  3. Offer hugs.  I already know what you’re thinking, “I’m not walking up to a stranger and hugging her.”  This one is harder for me, but I’ve done it. I think both of us felt better knowing that even a stranger can care about your wellbeing.
  4. Leave notes.  Handwritten notes especially ones that arrive in the mail are the best surprises.  Leave a positive note for your grocery cashier, or a friend you haven’t talked to in a while.  Carry a notepad in your car so you’re always ready to spread the joy.

I am so grateful I have a strong family and friends community to turn to in times of darkness.  Their strength, love and kindness lift me up when I fall down and help me get back on this journey called life.

Walt Disney said, “All of our dreams come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.”  I have a dream, a hope that our future generations will experience more love and compassion.  Will you join me?
