practicing yoga off the mat.
It’s a cloudy Saturday morning, and my bed is calling for me to sleep in. I pull the covers up to my chin and roll over sweetly trying to remember my last dream. Though I know this won’t last but a minute longer, I try to savor these few moments to myself. As anyone with young children knows, there is no sleeping in.
I begin my day much the same as everyday tending to my children’s needs, cleaning a portion of the house and laying out the plan for the day. I do this everyday even on the weekends. And while I’m a creature of habit, I grow tired of my mundane life. We may not realize immediately how we shift into autopilot while moving through our regular routine. But when we open our eyes, we start to notice how this fear and boredom is seeping into other parts of our life. My home yoga practice is one of the first places I notice any changes. When I’m distracted or feeling blue, my yoga flow looks the same way. I move slower and get frustrated with anything challenging. I start living in fantasy hoping I will have this wonderful, amazing day. Wake up! Finding joy, love and happiness in the things we do everyday can be meaningful. When we live in the past or future, we let our imagination dictate what our everyday life should be, but it’s not reality and will cause us more pain. Bringing mindfulness to the everyday mundane tasks will bring new experiences and challenges. Write down your everyday routine. Practice feeling love in each of these activities. Embrace each task with all of your heart and feel fulfilled not half-full. How do you feel about your everyday responsibilities now? Did you experience anything differently today?
